Glossary of Breast Cancer Terms | Randi Rentz

In reading about breast cancer you may come across a number of unfamiliar terms. This glossary, adapted from the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health, can help you decipher some of them. For additional questions about what these terms might mean in your individual case, of course, ask your doctor.

Abscess: A pocket of pus that forms as the body?s defenses attempt to wall off infection-causing germs.

Areola: The colored tissue that encircles the nipple.

Aspiration: Removal of fluid from a cyst or cells from a lump, using a needle and syringe.

Atypical hyperplasia: Cells that are both abnormal (atypical) and increased in number. Benign microscopic breast changes known as atypical hyperplasia moderately increase a woman?s risk of developing breast cancer.

Average risk (for breast cancer): A measure of the chances of getting breast cancer without the presence of any specific factors known to be associated with the disease.

Benign: Not cancerous; cannot invade neighboring tissues or spread to other parts of the body.

Benign breast changes: Noncancerous changes in the breast. Benign breast conditions can cause pain, lumpiness, and other problems.

Biopsy: The removal of a sample of tissue or cells for examination under a microscope for purposes of diagnosis.

BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes: The principal genes that, when altered, indicate an inherited susceptibility to breast cancer and possibly ovarian cancer. These gene alterations are present in 80 to 90 percent of hereditary cases of breast cancer.

Breast density: Glandular tissue in the breast common in younger women, making it difficult for mammography to detect breast cancer.

Breast implants: Silicone rubber sacs, which are filled with silicone gel or sterile saline, used for breast reconstruction after mastectomy.

BSE: Breast Self-Examination. The American Cancer Society says that women can use BSE to know what is normal for them.

Calcifications: Small deposits of calcium in tissue, which can be seen on mammograms.

Cancer: A general name for more than 100 diseases in which abnormal cells grow out of control. Cancer cells can invade and destroy healthy tissues, and they can spread through the bloodstream and the lymphatic system to other parts of the body.

Carcinoma: Cancer that begins in tissues lining or covering the surfaces (epithelial tissues) of organs, glands, or other body structures. Most cancers are carcinomas.

Carcinoma in situ: Cancer that is confined to the cells where it began, and has not spread into surrounding tissues.

Chemoprevention: The use of drugs or vitamins to prevent cancer in people who have precancerous conditions or a high risk of cancer, or to prevent the recurrence of cancer in people who have already been treated for it.

Chromosomes: Structures located in the nucleus of a cell, containing genes.

Clinical breast exam: A physical examination by a doctor or nurse of the breast, underarm and collarbone area, first on one side, then on the other.

Computed tomography (CT) scanning: An imaging technique that uses a computer to organize the information from multiple x-ray views and construct a cross-sectional image of areas inside the body.

Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD): the use of special computer programs to scan mammographic images and flag areas that look suspicious.

Core needle biopsy: The use of a small cutting needle to remove a core of tissue for microscopic examination.

Cyclic breast changes: Normal tissue changes that occur in response to the changing levels of female hormones during the menstrual cycle. Cyclic breast changes can produce swelling, tenderness and pain.

Cyst: Fluid-filled sac. Most breast cysts are benign.

Diagnostic mammogram: The use of a breast x-ray to evaluate the breasts of a woman who has symptoms of disease such as a lump, or whose screening mammogram shows an abnormality.

Digital mammography: A technique for recording x-ray images in computer code, which allows the information to enhance subtle, but potentially significant, changes.

Ducts: Channels that carry body fluids. Breast ducts transport milk from the breast?s lobules out to the nipple. (Read about

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS): Cancer that is confined to the ducts of the breast tissue.

Excisional biopsy: The surgical removal (excision) of an abnormal area of tissue, usually along with a margin of healthy tissue, for microscopic examination. Excisional biopsies remove the entire lump from the breast.

False negative (mammograms): Breast x-rays that miss cancer when it is present.

False positive (mammograms): Breast x-rays that indicate breast cancer is present when the disease is truly absent.

Fat necrosis: Lumps of fatty material that form in response to a bruise or blow to the breast.

Fibroadenoma: Benign breast tumor made up of both structural (fibro) and glandular (adenoma) tissues.

Fibrocystic disease: See Generalized breast lumpiness.

Fine needle aspiration: The use of a slender needle to remove fluid from a cyst or clusters of cells from a solid lump.

Frozen section: A sliver of frozen biopsy tissue. A frozen section provides a quick preliminary diagnosis but is not 100 percent reliable.

Generalized breast lumpiness: Breast irregularities and lumpiness, commonplace and noncancerous. Sometimes called ?fibrocystic disease? or ?benign breast disease.?

Gene: Segment of a DNA molecule and the fundamental biological unit of heredity.

Genetic change: An alteration in a segment of DNA, which can disturb a gene?s behavior and sometimes leads to disease.

Higher risk (for breast cancer): A measure of the chances of getting breast cancer when factor(s) known to be associated with the disease are present.

Hormone replacement therapy: Hormone-containing medications taken to offset the symptoms and other effects of the hormone loss that accompanies menopause.

Hormones: Chemicals produced by various glands in the body, which produce specific effects on specific target organs and tissues.

Hyperplasia: Excessive growth of cells. Several types of benign breast conditions involve hyperplasia.

Incisional biopsy: The surgical removal of a portion of an abnormal area of tissue, by cutting into (incising) it, for microscopic examination.

Infection: Invasion of body tissues by microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses.

Infiltrating cancer: Cancer that has spread to nearby tissue, lymph nodes under the arm, or other parts of the body. (Same as Invasive cancer.)

Inflammation: The body?s protective response to injury (including infection). Inflammation is marked by heat, redness, swelling, pain and loss of function.

Intraductal papilloma: A small wart-like growth that projects into a breast duct.

Invasive cancer: Cancer that has spread to nearby tissue, lymph nodes under the arm, or other parts of the body. (Same as Infiltrating cancer.)

Laser beam scanning: a technology being studied in research for breast cancer detection that shines a laser beam through the breast and records the image produced, using a special camera.

Lobes, lobules, bulbs: Milk-producing tissues of the breast. Each of the breast?s 15 to 20 lobes branches into smaller lobules and each lobule ends in scores of tiny bulbs. Milk originates in the bulbs and is carried by ducts to the nipple.

Localization biopsy: The use of mammography to locate tissue containing an abnormality that can be detected only on mammograms, so it can be removed for microscopic examination.

Lumpectomy: Surgery to remove only the cancerous breast lump; usually followed by radiation therapy.

Lymphatic system: The tissues and organs that produce, store, and transport cells that fight infection and disease.

Macrocalcifications: Coarse calcium deposits. They are most likely due to aging, old injuries, or inflammations and usually are associated with benign conditions.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): A technique that uses a powerful magnet linked to a computer to create detailed pictures of areas inside the body.

Malignancy: State of being cancerous. Malignant tumors can invade surrounding tissues and spread to other parts of the body.

Mammary duct ectasia: A benign breast condition in which ducts beneath the nipple become dilated and sometimes inflamed, and which can cause pain and nipple discharge.

Mammogram: An x-ray of the breast.

Mammography: The examination of breast tissue using x-rays.

Mastectomy: Surgery to remove the breast (or as much of the breast as possible).

Mastitis: Infection of the breast. Mastitis is most often seen in nursing mothers.

Menstrual cycle: The monthly cycle of discharge, during a woman?s reproductive years, of blood and tissues from the uterus.

Microcalcifications: Tiny deposits of calcium in the breast, which can show up on a mammogram. Certain patterns of microcalcifications are sometimes a sign of breast cancer.

Mutation: A change in the number, arrangement or molecular sequence of a gene.

Needle biopsy: Use of a needle to extract cells or bits of tissue for microscopic examination.

Nipple discharge: Fluid coming from the nipple.

Nonpalpable cancer: Cancer in breast tissue that can be seen on mammograms but that cannot be felt.

One-step procedure: Biopsy and surgical treatment combined into a single operation.

Osteoporosis: A condition of mineral loss that causes a decrease in bone density and an enlargement of bone spaces, producing bone fragility. Certain treatments for breast cancer can impact a woman?s risk of developing osteoporosis.

Palpation: Use of the fingers to press body surfaces, so as to feel tissues and organs underneath. Palpating the breast for lumps is a crucial part of a physical breast examination.

Pathologist: A doctor who diagnoses disease by studying cells and tissues under a microscope.

Permanent section: Biopsy tissue specially prepared and mounted on slides so that it can be examined under a microscope by a pathologist.

Phytochemicals: Naturally occurring chemicals found in plants that may be important nutrients for reducing a person?s cancer risk.

Positron emission tomography (PET scanning): A technique that uses signals emitted by radioactive tracers to construct images of the distribution of the tracers in the human body.

Prophylactic mastectomy: Surgery to remove a breast that is not known to contain breast cancer, for the purpose of reducing an individual?s cancer risk.

Radiation: Energy carried by waves or by streams of particles. Various forms of radiation can be used in low doses to diagnose disease and in high doses to treat disease.

Radiologist: A doctor with special training in the use of diagnostic imaging such as CT, MRI, PET and ultrasound, to image body tissues and to treat disease.

Risk: A measure of the likelihood of some uncertain or random event with negative consequences for human life or health.

Risk factors (for cancer): Conditions or agents that increase a person?s chances of getting cancer. Risk factors do not necessarily cause cancer; rather, they are indicators, statistically associated with an increase in likelihood.

Sclerosing adenosis: A benign breast disease that involves the excessive growth of tissues in the breast?s lobules.

Screening mammogram: Breast x-ray used to look for signs of disease such as cancer in people who are symptom-free.

Sonogram: The image produced by ultrasound.

Specimen x-ray: An x-ray of tissue that has been surgically removed (surgical specimen).

Stereotactic localization biopsy: A technique that employs three-dimensional x-ray to pinpoint a specific target area. It is used in conjunction with needle biopsy of nonpalpable breast abnormalities.

Surgical biopsy: The surgical removal of tissue for microscopic examination and diagnosis. Surgical biopsies can be either excisional or incisional. (See Excisional biopsy and Incisional biopsy.)

Tamoxifen: A hormonally related drug that has been used to treat breast cancer and is being tested as a possible preventive strategy. Women on this medication should have regular ultrasounds of the endometrium (lining of the uterus) because of potential changes there.

Tumor: An abnormal growth of tissue. Tumors may be either benign or cancerous.

Tumor markers: Proteins (either amounts or unique variants) made by altered genes in cancer cells that are involved in the progression of the disease.

Two-step procedure: Biopsy and treatment done in two stages, usually a week or two apart.

Ultrasound: The use of sound waves to produce images of body tissues.

X-ray: A high-energy form of radiation. X-rays form an image of body structures by traveling through the body and striking a sheet of film. Breast x-rays are called mammograms.

Kitajima misses out, Hansen marks comeback

LONDON (Reuters) - Japanese Olympic champion Kosuke Kitajima failed in his bid to win a third breaststroke double, coming fifth in a 100 meters race that broke a world record and saw U.S. arch-rival Brendan Hansen mark his own comeback by squeezing onto the podium.

Kitajima, hugely popular in Japan, won the 100-200 breaststroke double at both Athens and Beijing Olympics, after finishing a close fourth in Sydney in the 100 as a 17-year-old.

But, doubt-ridden and aching in the days leading up to the London race, he was left behind in Sunday's final, as South Africa's Cameron Van der Burgh, Australia's Christian Sprenger and Hansen took gold, silver and bronze respectively.

"It was a really tough race. I needed to break the world record to win and to be honest I didn't have it in me," he said after the race, through a translator.

"When I was asked if I could swim 58.4 today, it was impossible... My personal best is 58.9 seconds, so I am disappointed not to reach the time."

A time of 58.9 would have put Kitajima on the podium, ahead of both Sprenger, who swam 58.93, and Hansen, at 59.49.

"I have enjoyed the comeback process until now... I still have a chance in the 200. It is going to be a high-level race, I have to think about the 200 more seriously."

Hugely popular in Japan, with nearly 100,000 twitter followers tracking his moves, Kitajima fought injury after his Athens triumph to repeat his double in Beijing, then flirted with retirement.

He is no longer the brash youngster whose whoops of delight echoed around the pool in Athens and has struggled with injury. He has made no secret of how painful the process of Olympic training is for him at 29, in a sport dominated by younger men.

"He's been there, done that and so it is one of those things. He may not have the most fire underneath him, because he's already done it twice," Hansen said.

"He swam a great race tonight. It was probably one of the most talented fields I have ever swam in and I don't think it takes away from anything he has done."

Hansen himself, who has traded records and titles with Kitajima for a decade, quit swimming after Beijing, taking up triathlons instead.

But he made a comeback as London approached, determined to win his first individual gold and marked a return to the podium on Sunday with what he said was the Olympic medal that meant the most to him.

"Back about eight months ago in the U.S., there were about 15 or 20 athletes targeting a comeback and I am the only one here."

Bafin widens scrutiny of German banks amid Libor: sources

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Markets regulator Bafin has extended its scrutiny of German banks by investigating more lenders following a global interest rate rigging scandal, sources have told Reuters.

Eight German banks, which participate or have participated in the rate for the euro zone, known as Euribor, were ordered to submit details of how they calculate the interest rate and monitor its mechanisms, according to the regulatory sources, who are familiar with the details of the investigation.

Bafin set a deadline of last Thursday for the submissions to be made but the results of the investigation are not yet known, the sources said.

It was not clear when the results of the probe would be available.

German banks participating in Euribor include Deutsche Bank , Commerzbank , DZ Bank , LBBW , BayernLB , Helaba , NordLB and Landesbank Berlin .

Bafin is already conducting a so-called special probe - the most severe form of investigation it can undertake - into Deutsche Bank over suspected manipulation of interbank lending rates.

Investigators in the United States, Europe and Japan are examining more than a dozen big banks over suspected rigging of the London Interbank Offered Rate (Libor).

The Libor rates, compiled from estimates by large banks of how much they believe they have to pay to borrow from each other, are used to determine interest rates on trillions of dollars worth of contracts around the world.

German magazine Der Spiegel reported on Sunday that Bafin was planning to raise the number of supervisors for Deutsche Bank to three or four from two.

Bafin declined to comment.

The nation's weather

Active weather continues Sunday along the East Coast while showers and thunderstorms persist in the Upper Midwest. A cold front extending from the Northeast through the Tennessee Valley will move southeastward throughout the day. This system will linger along the Eastern Seaboard, pulling moisture in from the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. This will kick up scattered showers and thunderstorms from the Gulf states through the extreme Northeast. Some of these storms may produce bouts of heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts.

Elsewhere, a low pressure system is expected to move across the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, producing showers and thunderstorms across Iowa and Minnesota. South of this activity, a dominant ridge of high pressure remains the main weather feature across the Central and Southern Plains. This system will keep moisture away to the south and north, allowing for sunny skies and hot temperatures to persist. Excessive heat warnings and heat advisories will remain in effect for these areas on Sunday.

Out West, more thunderstorm activity is anticipated in the Southwest. Monsoonal moisture over the Four Corners will maintain scattered storms across Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states ranged Saturday from a morning low of 35 degrees at West Yellowstone, Montana, to a high of 108 degrees at Coffeyville, Kan.

'5 guys who are No. 1 receivers'

nfl_g_snoopdog_400Getty Images

Jets rookie WR Stephen Hill is drawing praise for doing a lot of what he likely will be doing this year:? blocking.

Pats WR Donte? Stallworth returns to New England having ?matured as a player, matured as a person.?? (Killing a guy while driving a car under the influence tends to do that.)

The goal for getting a new lease in place for the Bills officially has been moved to the end of the year.

When it comes to hairstyles, Dolphins rookies are sporting the modified Cruella deVille.

With WR Antonio Brown and not WR Mike Wallace getting a new contract from the Steelers, Snoop Dogg may need an explanation.

Browns DT Ahtyba Rubin is recovering from a procedure to repair a slight pelvic tear.

Bengals LB Brandon Joiner is on the reserve/did not report list for a good reason; he?s serving a three-year prison sentence in Texas.? (Shouldn?t they have traded him to the Lions by now?)

Is Michael Oher finally ready to play left tackle?? (With Bryant McKinnie AWOL, it may not matter.)

The Jaguars have released FB Naufahu Tahi.? (Brad Childress wants to know why they didn?t they just make him the extra man on the roster.)

Colts coach Chuck Pagano?s first training camp as head coach opens on Saturday.

Titans QB Matt Hasselbeck put business first in the offseason; ?I played it more safe and I didn?t really travel,? Hasselbeck said. ?I didn?t really go anywhere for fun.? Everywhere I went, I had a purpose.? If I was going somewhere, then throwing and working out was priority No. 1 all the time.?

Texans LB Connor Barwin has traded in the Cosmo Kramer for the Gary Kubiak.

A jury has awarded $5.2 million against Chargers doctor David Chao for prescribing a cold-therapy device after knee surgery; Chao has now been on the wrong end of multiple malpractice cases.? (But, please, keep letting him provide care to elite professional athletes.)

Broncos LB Von Miller thinks that the team?s seventh defensive coordinator in seven seasons is ?laid back?; Jack Del Rio says Miller and the rest of the defense are in for a surprise.

The Torn ACL Trio (Eric Berry, Jamaal Charles, Tony Moeaki) all practiced for the Chiefs on Friday; ?I feel I?ve got my swag back,? Charles said.

Here are five questions for the Raiders.

Our old pal (and former PFT contributor) Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com tears into Cowboys WR Dez Bryant for keeping his mouth shut in the wake of his recent arrest.

Giants co-owner John Mara was surprised by the number of media at training camp: ??I can?t believe so many of you are here.? Tebow isn?t here.?

Former Redskins QB Colt Brennan has been arrested in Hawaii for suspicion of drunk driving and drug possession.

Eagles TE Brent Celek (knee) is expected to miss only a few days.

A lawsuit against former Vikings WR and current ESPN analyst Cris Carter involving a rap-song investment gone bad contends that Carter was close to becoming the Alabama receivers coach in 2011.? (It?s unknown whether Carter ever declared, ?I?m not going to be the Alabama receivers coach.?)

Bears K Robbie Gould thinks it would be a ?big risk? for the team to let LB Brian Urlacher become a free agent.? (It also would be a ?big risk? for the Bears to make personnel decisions based on the advice of a kicker.)

Packers LT Marshall Newhouse is gaining confidence via praise from his coach ? and practice against LB Clay Matthews.

Lions WR Calvin Johnson apparently can?t walk down the street in Mexico.? (Sergio Mendes can sympathize.)

Newly re-signed Falcons LB Mike Peterson is now known as ?Unc?; ?I?m everybody?s uncle around here now,? Peterson said.

Saints CB Patrick Robinson made the play of the day on Friday, stealing a Drew Brees pass away from TE Jimmy Graham.

Falcons RB Jason Snelling wants more opportunities on offense.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera hopes increased competition will create increased urgency in training camp; among other things, both kicking positions are up for grabs.

The mentor of 49ers LB Aldon Smith says that his off-field problems will be a ?small blip on his radar.?? (If getting stabbed twice is a small blip on the radar, that?s a big-ass radar.)

The Cardinals are holding their annual Red-White Scrimmage on Saturday.? (QB Kevin Kolb may want to wear ear plugs.)

Rams TE Michael Hoomanawanui is able to practice after suffering a torn ACL on November 13.

Will the Seahawks quarterback competition be reduced from three to two?? ?The answer is yes, I guess,? coach Pete Carroll said.? ?You?re just going to have to suck it up and wait.?

Colorado shooting suspect was seeing university psychiatrist

Defense attorneys for James Holmes filed court papers that say Holmes was being treated by a psychiatrist at the University of Colorado prior to the 'Dark Knight' shooting at an Aurora theater.

By Staff,?Associated Press / July 27, 2012

James Holmes, the primary suspect in the killing of 12 people in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater, appears in Arapahoe County District Court with defense attorney Tamara Brady in Centennial, Colo. His defense attorneys are trying to find out who leaked information about a package Holmes sent to his psychiatrist at the University of Colorado.

The former graduate student accused in the deadly Colorado movie theater shooting was being treated by a psychiatrist at the university where he studied, according to court papers filed Friday.

Defense attorneys for James Holmes, 24, made the disclosure in a court motion. It sought to discover the source of leaks to some media outlets that Holmes sent the psychiatrist a package containing a notebook with descriptions of an attack.

The motion says that the leak violated a judge's gag order in the case and jeopardizes Holmes' right to a fair trial.

"The government's disclosure of this confidential and privileged information has placed Mr. Holmes' constitutional rights to due process and a fair trial by an impartial jury in serious jeopardy," wrote the attorneys.

IN PICTURES: Aftermath of Colorado shooting

The motion adds that the package contained communications between Holmes and his psychiatrist that should be shielded from public view. The document describes Holmes as a "psychiatric patient" of Dr. Lynne Fenton.

As The Christian Science Monitor reported, the contents of the package could be used by both sides in the legal case.

"Is it a manifesto or an apology? If it includes drawings that are sufficiently deranged as to be from someone who appears mentally ill, it could assist defense in a not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity defense,? legal analyst Scott Robinson told The Denver Post. ?If it appears to be the work of someone who knew exactly what they are doing, and they knew it was wrong, that could help the prosecution."

Calls to Holmes' lawyer, Daniel King, were referred to the head of the Colorado State Public Defender's office, Douglas Wilson, who was out of the office and did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

A message left with Fenton's office was not immediately returned. Casmir Spencer, a spokeswoman for the Arapahoe County District Attorney's office, said she could not comment.

The package was seized by authorities on Monday after it was discovered in the mailroom at the University of Colorado, Denver. It's unclear if it was sent before the attack at the July 20 midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" that left 12 dead and dozens of others injured.

Randy MossAP

49ers receiver Randy Moss did a lot of talking on UStream after he decided to return to the NFL and before he found a team.? Since finding a team, he hasn?t done much talking.

On Friday at training camp, he did.

?These guys here love to work, they love to compete and they know just by me signing here it?s just something that me being around a great group of guys [who are] young and enthusiastic makes me feel young, too,? Moss said in comments broadcast on ESPN?s NFL Live.? ?The love that I have for the game of football is gonna always be in me and I just wanna play football and that?s just really being here and Coach Harbaugh and this organization accepting me and bringing me here was just something hopefully I can give something back in return and that?s with my play and my presence out on and off the field.?

Also on Friday, coach Jim Harbaugh continued with the gushing that has emanated from multiple members of the organization throughout the offseason.? ?The funnest part is out on the practice field,? Harbaugh said.? ?I get some joy being around Randy Moss out there.? He?s got a knack for saying the right thing at the right time.? The right joke at the right time.?

The joke ultimately may be on those who are ready to write off Randy?s chances of playing well in 2012.? After his comments were played during NFL Live and Herm Edwards said Moss could catch 10 touchdown passes this year, Adam Schefter and Bill Polian were skeptical, to say the least.

?Ten touchdowns is awfully high for a player who was out of football last year, who had a minimal impact the year before, who basically hasn?t made a contribution ? a meaningful contribution ? since 2009,? Schefter said.? ?There?s a spot for him in the San Francisco 49ers offense.? But we?re not getting the 25-year-old Randy Moss, we?re getting the 35-year-old Randy Moss.?

Polian was more blunt.

?The guy I saw two years ago, played against was not the Randy Moss who set records in New England,? Polian said.? ?I didn?t see any explosion, didn?t see any speed.? [Editor's note:? Darrelle Revis may disagree.]? So, he?ll have to make a believer out of me.? If he?s doing well by Week Eight then he?s back.? Otherwise, I have my doubts.?

It would be easy to agree, given the manner in which Moss disappeared in Tennessee after being essentially fired by two teams in less than a month.? But two factors could prove them wrong.

First, the praise of Moss from his teammates, both for his performance and his attitude, has been universal and unequivocal.? Everyone in San Fran loves the guy, and everyone who has seen him work since joining the 49ers believes he can still get it done.

Second, we?ve seen this movie before from Moss.? After his second year with the Raiders in 2006, the popular view was that Moss was washed up, that he was done, that he couldn?t run.

Rejuvenated by a trade to the Patriots, Moss ran down Jerry Rice?s record for single-season touchdown receptions, propelling the Pats to the first undefeated 16-game season.

When Randy?s head isn?t in it, it doesn?t matter what his body can do.? When Randy is ready to go, his team will get the best of whatever he has.

The point is that we shouldn?t assume anything about Randy?s physical abilities based on what we saw in 2010 because his performance was hampered by the fact that he didn?t care.

He cares now.

?I play when I wanna play.?? It arguably belongs on his tombstone.? For now, it should prompt anyone who thinks based on 2010 that he won?t have it in 2012 to think again.

US import ban hurting Myanmar people: think-tank

A US ban on all Myanmar imports is stifling key job-creating areas of the economy such as the garment industry rather than hurting the interests of the corrupt elite it targets, a report said Friday.

The International Crisis Group think-tank said Myanmar's reform process had challenged "the dominance" of crony businessmen, who flourished under the disbanded junta, and nudged the economy towards greater openness at the expense of some key hardliners.

But it warned that renewing the US import embargo, due to lapse this year, "could have a serious impact on Myanmar's economic recovery".

The ban is skewing the nation's economy towards "potentially problematic" extractive industries at the expense of sectors that employ large numbers of ordinary people, it said.

Industries such as oil, gas and gem mining have long been linked with corruption in resource-rich but poor Myanmar and also raise fears over environmental damage.

"At this stage in the reform process, it is indeed hard to see how retention by the US of its import ban could in any way serve the interests of the Myanmar people or assist the democratisation process," the ICG report said.

Washington lifted a slew of financial and investment sanctions on Myanmar earlier this month, including allowing finance houses to work in the former pariah nation, in response to nascent democratic reforms.

But it has retained the ban on Myanmar imports -- a restriction that a US Senate committee this month said should be extended by three years.

The United States says it will keep some sanctions in an effort to pressure President Thein Sein's government to continue reforms as the country emerges from half a century of repressive military rule.

The ICG report welcomed economic and political changes that undercut the dominance of cronies and the military.

"Their (the cronies') key sources of revenue are being removed, including control of monopolies as well as privileged access to permits, licenses, and major government contracts.

"They recognise they have much to lose in the new economic reality," it said, adding that the tycoons appear ready to "accept a diminished role" rather than impede reform.

At the same time it said key military brass had offered support for the reforms resulting in army monopolies, such as over cooking oil and beer, opening up to greater competition.

The report also welcomed the recent resignation of a vice president widely regarded as a hardliner, Aung Myint Oo -- who is closely linked to former junta chief Than Shwe -- as a key step towards widening reform.

Myint Swe, seen as a marginally more moderate figure, has been selected by the military as the replacement, but his appointment has not yet been formally approved amid uncertainty about whether he is qualified.

New Zealand pair set world rowing record

New Zealand's Hamish Bond and Eric Murray set a new men's pairs rowing world record in the Olympic heats Saturday, smashing the mark held by Britain's Matthew Pinsent and James Cracknell.

The multiple world champions timed 6min 8.50sec on the first day of competition, almost six seconds quicker than the 10-year-old record set at the 2002 world championships.

"Six seconds, wow, it doesn't surprise me," said Bond, after the event held at Eton Dorney to the west of London.

"It's a great confidence boost to the whole team, I mean if they can beat it by six seconds, then everything has the potential to be much closer than we thought.

"When we were warming up, we saw there was a nice tailwind and some fast times. Yeah, they were fast conditions but we didn't really have an inclination of how fast we were going."

The duo, who are unbeaten since teaming up in 2009, are now safely into the semi-finals.

"There's one thing saying you're really well prepared and there's another to go and show you're prepared, but this has given us a real confidence boost," said Murray.

Dinofarm Games ? The iPad is The Best Digital Game Console

Right out of the gate, know that I am not a big fan of Apple.? I?m not crazy about their computers, I think everything they sell costs two to three times what it should, I despise their immoral vendor lock-in approach to just about everything they do.? A lot of people probably wouldn?t think so given that my first game, 100 Rogues, was on iOS only.? The reason it was an iOS-only game, as opposed to an Android game, was because back in 2008, Android didn?t really exist, and there seemed to be a lot of demand for new iOS games.? Which ties nicely into my main point here.

I got an iPad 2 a few weeks ago, with two major purposes.? The primary purpose was for playing digital boardgames.? If you weren?t aware, there?s been a wealth of great digital boardgames coming out over the last two years or so.? Puerto Rico, Tigris & Euphrates, Le Havre, Caylus and a ton more (I?ll provide a full list later) have all appeared in digital versions on iOS.? The secondary purpose was for testing our upcoming game, Auro.

I want to make super clear that the games I?m talking about are not the games that most people think of as iOS games.? Shit like Angry Birds, Temple Run, Cut the Rope and Where?s my Water are all bullshit memorization/execution puzzles that are only marginally above ?twiddling one?s thumbs? in terms of their level of interest for an adult mind.

Now, I of course already had an iOS device from my 100 Rogues-testing days:? a 2nd generation iPod Touch.? This device is actually still super solid, doesn?t have anything wrong with it, and should be fully capable of playing digital boardgames (which have the graphical intensity of a website).? Unfortunately, Apple basically screwed me and everyone else who bought that generation, and locked us off from getting some OS updates.? This means that fewer and fewer (now approaching zero) new games that are coming out can even be downloaded on this machine.

Now, I?m sure they have some technical justification for what that is, but I?d be extremely surprised if I found it convincing.? The truth is that they simply said ?okay, it?s time for people whose devices from 2008 still work are FORCED to buy a new device.?? It?s an advanced form of planned obsolescence:? forced obsolescence.? They can basically just shut off updates for any device they want at any time, and then everyone with that category of devices is basically screwed.? Great.

Back to the iPad

I realize that I?m not doing a great job of convincing anyone to buy any Apple products so far.? Here?s the unfortunate truth, though:? if you like games (and by games, I mean contests of ambiguous decisions), there is absolutely no better place to be than the iPad.

I hate touch screens.? They?re OK in a turn-based game that doesn?t force you to click on small individual things (in Auro, you?re only ever asked to click on 6 huge direction-based areas or 7 large circular buttons below), but a tiny screen also puts a huge limitation on what kinds of games are possible.? Any game with cards with text on them is rough, and any kind of ?moving units around a map? type of game is also rough.? The iPad solves these issues by having a big screen.? It still sucks for real-time games, but in terms of turn based games it?s honestly as easy as using a mouse.

In case anyone wanted to accuse me of basically making a ?sunk costs fallacy? ? that I?m saying ?hey everyone, go buy an iPad because I bought one and now I?m forced to think they?re great?, I hope I?ve quelled that fear.? I paid just as much for my 2nd gen iTouch actually (I got my iPad used), and I never really said anything good about it to anyone (in fact, I remember saying that the iTouch is probably the worst product Apple sells, and I still stand by this).

I?m arguing that the iPad is right now sadly the best digital game console in existence (not counting PC).? This is a combination of the other consoles being almost totally horrible, and a quickly increasing number of actually good, actually interesting games on the platform.? So without further adieu?

?

The Games

I haven?t gotten around to playing every good game on the platform yet, as I just got the thing a few weeks ago, but I am getting to it.? Here?s the ones I?ve played and think are fantastic.? Most of them are digital versions of boardgames, but not all.? I want to stress:? none of the below games are dumb puzzles, none are tower defense, none are Farmville clones.

Outwitters

Outwitters ? I think this is the best original digital game ever made.? It?s not based on a boardgame, but its game design is so good you might think it was.? It?s a turn-based tactical wargame, a genre that I know very well, and I can say it?s the best one I?ve ever played.? It?s extremely elegant, hex-based, super-visually clear, with a great online matchmaking system.? It?s just fantastic, and best of all, it?s free to play.? There?s extra content that you totally don?t need and won?t make you more powerful.

Le Havre ? Designed by Uwe Rosenberg, slightly better known for Agricola, which is currently Boardgamegeek?s #2 game.? I?ve been playing Agricola for awhile, and while I enjoy it, I think it has some serious problems.? The two biggest problems are the ?drawing fourteen cards at the start of the game with tons of unique text on each of them?, and the multi-player solitaire thing, where you?re not really interacting with each other much.? Le Havre, in my view, solves these two problems.? A great thing about it is that there are common buildings, and when you buy a building, other players can use that building that you now own and pay you to use it.? This creates a really cool little economics game between the players.? It?s still extremely complicated and far from elegant, but it makes for a great game to play against bots.

Reiner Knizia?s Tigris & Euphrates ? A very interesting tile-laying game with some awesome dynamic mergers of cities that is reminiscent of group mergers late game in Go.? Unfortunately the game is limited by a really severly important tile-drawing mechanism (if you don?t get enough red tiles, you?re at a major disadvantage and other players can push you around).? Also, it doesn?t make for a great online game, but it?s fun versus bots.

Reiner Knizia?s Samurai ? Another tile-laying game from Knizia.? I think this one is smoother, but probably a little bit less interesting.? Makes for a great introduction-to-real-boardgames game, and is much better to play online than T&E.? (Sadly, the best of Knizia?s tile-laying trilogy, Through the Desert, did not make for a wonderful app, so I?m not recommending it, although it does exist).

Ravenmark: Scourge of Estellion ? Fans of Final Fantasy Tactics need to jump all over this one.? It?s got a very interesting Rock-Paper-Scissors mechanism (a bit like Fire Emblem but without the randomness), and a great production.? The only problem is it?s campaign based and there?s not any kind of endless/randomized mode.? This makes it a lot more ?videogamey? than the other games on my list.

Zaga-33 ? This is a solid, boiled-down roguelike.? You can play it free on PC, I recommend you check it out.

Rune Raiders ? Haven?t played another game like this.? You?re moving upwards on a long shaft of tiles with a party of D&D-role-ish units that are in formation.? Feels puzzley, but it has a randomized mode that?s score based.? Very cool, although undercut by some annoying metagame and there?s probably too much content.

Tilt To Live ? Another game from the creators of Outwitters.? It?s a tilting game.? You would be forgiven for being completely in doubt about the possibility of this game being any good, but the fact it it is good.? Really good.? A super simple game that might look a bit like Geometry Wars but is actually a million times more elegant, interesting and difficult.

Knizia?s Labyrinth ? A really unassuming little solitaire game that on first glance seems like it might be dull and flat.? Actually, it?s challenging and unique.? You have to lay tiles, randomly drawn, in such a way as to get to the other side of a map, while getting as much treasure as possible.? It?s difficult and your greed will be your undoing!? I recommend the free version, as the content added from getting the full version only make the game more luck-based (this also exists on Android).

Wabash Cannonball ? This is a re-implementation of the great train-based boardgame Chicago Express.? Out of all the serious train-games I?ve played, this is by far the most elegant.? Extremely knife-fightey and strategic, and this is one of the few cases where the digital version is just really superior to the actual boardgame.? The reason is that the boardgame is a bit ?math?ey, like you have to calculate things frequently, and the digital game does a lot of that for you.? Very good AI, too!

Wabash Cannonball

SmartGo ? Like I said, KGS Go doesn?t exist on iOS.? While that is unfortunate, SmartGo is a great way to learn to play.? It has a long, in-depth tutorial mode, lots of go problems, and a great AI matchmaking system.

Knizia?s Medici ? Medici is about as simple of a bidding game as you could get, but it?s great for what it is.? It takes less than five minutes to play a full game, and yet it?s interesting and difficult.? No online multiplayer, but the AI is pretty good.

Catan ? I?m not crazy about The Settlers of Catan, but I know other people are.? And I?ll still play it from time to time, when I?m in the mood to be robbed by dice-rolls (which isn?t often).

Battle at Gundabad ? I mentioned that I play a lot of Androminion.? Well, before that, I played tons of Battle at Gundabad, which is a Dominion re-skin.? Great implementation of a game that, while I think it?s a little weak, certainly has its appeal.

Bohnanza ? Actually, I recommend everyone get the boardgame version of this.? It?s cheap, and an awesome social party-game that isn?t bullshit.? There is an iOS version of it that?s pretty good, but unfortunately a lot of the fun of the game ? negotiation ? isn?t there against the bots, and there?s no multiplayer.

Neuroshima Hex ? a very original tile-laying game with a very original gameplay mechanism.? Place pieces facing each other, and eventually all attacks happen at once.? Limited by a tile-drawing system and shamefully crappy multiplayer, but I still recommend it.

Drop7 ? A pretty neat Tetris/Sudoku-ish piece-dropping game.? Original rules, which I appreciate.? Somehow, I haven?t found the game terribly compelling, although it?s definitely solid and original, and worth playing.

Reiner Knizia?s Money ? Did I mention I like Reiner Knizia?? This is a bidding game that?s like one notch more complex than Medici, and also one notch better.? You?re collecting sets of money denominations to try to gain the highest score by the end of the game, but you also have to use that same money to bid with during the game.? Good multiplayer was just added, so check it out!

Blokus ? A different kind of abstract strategy game, where you?re trying to fit as many things that look like Tetris tetronimoes onto the board before the game ends.? Very difficult and thought-provoking;? much deeper than you might think on first play.

Blokus

?

It?s Alive ? This is such a good example of the iOS platform being the best place to play games.? This is a somewhat mediocre boardgame, and even a somewhat mediocre implementation, and yet it?s more interesting than 99.9% of videogames that you can find on XBox, Wii or PS3.? Has a cool bidding system where you can buy things outright for full, start a bid on them to try to get them for cheap, or sell them for half-price.? Just enough complexity to keep it surprising.

Small World ? A very cool war-game with lots of fun races and fun powers.? Limited by a very obvious ?game design band-aid? dice roll and not only no online multiplayer at all, but for some reason you can only play 2 players against the bot, which is particularly strange because I think Small World is far better with 3 or 4 players.

Hive ? One of the most unique abstract games I?ve played.? There?s no board;? you?re dynamically creating the board through adding linked tiles together.? A neat insect theme which supports the gameplay actions really well.? Decent implementation, for some reason there?s 3D graphics though which is only a bad thing.

100 Rogues ? Of course, I can?t be trusted, being the guy who designed this game.? However, this was my first experience playing the game on iPad, and it is so much better.? Everything is better on iPad, but 100 Rogues really needs it, particularly for those moments where you?re trying to click on a specific tile that you want to throw a rock at, or something.

?

Here?s even more games that I plan on checking out, but haven?t yet:

Puerto Rico ? It?s freaking Puerto Rico.? It?s like the best game ever made.? I have not had a chance to try this iOS version, largely because I play enough digital PR with the free Java version, Tropic Euro on my computer.

Caylus ? A Eurogame that everyone seems to love that has no randomness.? I haven?t played it yet but I?m pretty sure within the next month or two I?ll be saying it?s one of my favorite games ever.

Tikal ? Don?t know much about this except that it?s a beloved boardgame.? That?s enough of a reason to check it out!

BattleCon ? Looks like a significantly less-random Yomi-ish game.? There?s no card drawing, although there is still simultaneous actions (which aren?t random exactly, but are guessing).

Ticket to Ride ? There are two versions of this on iOS actually, and I?m hearing conflicting stuff about which version I should check out.? However, I own the actual game and have played tons of games of it online (at Daysofwonder.com), so I know what to expect, and I?ll be picking it up eventually.? It?s a random, but elegant family game that has a little bit more stabbyness than you might expect.

McGuire ? A clone of Acquire, which everyone says is amazing and looks super elegant.

Ra, BattleLine, Skyline, Deck Buster, Keltis Oracle ? More Reiner Knizia games, so of course I?m going to check them out.

Tichu, Haggis ? These are both partnership trick-taking card game that look a little bit like a slightly more elegant Contract Bridge.? Excited to learn them.

?

And finally, some games that I don?t like, but I expect a lot of other people will like:

Magic 2013 ? It?s Magic: The Gathering.? A lot of people like it.? I?m not one of them (I?ve written before about why CCGs are horribly doomed).? Seems like a decent implementation, but it does have these annoying unskippable timers.

Summoner Wars ? I think this game is basically awful, but I wish I had found it when I was in high school, because I probably would have loved it back then.? It?s basically M:TG but with a grid, and slightly less collectible.? I?ll write a full review of this game later on, because I really think it?s bad.? The application is fantastic, though.

Knizia?s Ingenious ? The one Knizia game I?ve ever played that I didn?t love.? I don?t know what it is about this game;? it just doesn?t grab me for whatever reason.? Certainly not a bad game.

Hero Academy ? This is also not a boardgame, but seems inspired by some of them.? I personally think that Outwitters has made this game obsolete, but I know many will disagree with me, so I?ve put it here.? A neat tactical wargame.

?

Get an iPad

Okay, so that?s enough for now, but I seriously could go on, for a long time too.?? Whoops, I forgot Knizia?s Kingdoms.? Oh and Zooloretto.? Oh and Knizia?s Keltis Oracle.? Plus there are another 5 or 10 I haven?t even tried yet, like Food Fight.? I?m sure many who read this can list another 20 that I?ve completely missed.

So with that, I have to recommend that you go get an iPad.? It?s the best place to play games right now.? I don?t think I?ve told another human being to buy a gaming machine (besides PC which is obviously the very best place to play games ever, ever) since the 1990s, so it feels weird to say it.? But go pay Apple corporation nearly twice what you should on a tablet.

I should mention that I have an Android phone, and it?s sadly nowhere near iOS in terms of how many great games are on it.? I?ll go over a few.? There are literally only two games that I?ve found that are great and only available on Android (not on iOS).? Those are:

KGS Go ? This costs $15, which is a lot of money, but honestly if you like Go, it?s worth it.? Instant match-making on KGS, the world?s best online go service, is something you really can?t put a price on.

Androminion ? Dominion is a dumb, but extremely fun game.? I?ve played probably 1,000 games of this on my Droid, despite myself.? Androminion is free, and has all of the expansions.

Other than that, there?s only about a half-dozen other games that are worth owning, all of which are available on iOS as well:? stuff like Blokish, Catan, Knizia?s Labyrinth and a few others.

So!? In conclusion:? if you like games (and by that I mean, contests of ambiguous decisions), go get an iPad.? Things are only getting started now ? I think we?re entering a whole new era of difficult, interesting, and thought-provoking games.

Multifamily Strength Enticing Banks Back into CRE Lending | SMI ...

The thaw in bank lending for commercial real estate appears to have quickened a bit in the second quarter based on comments from bank executives in their earnings conference call.
It is not a unanimous movement back into CRE lending as several of the larger banks are still working through mounds of distressed assets and many are still in cost-cutting mode. However, a number of others have decided the markets are ripening and the time is either right to return to CRE lending, or is fast approaching to do so.
Interest in multifamily properties is leading the comeback, but many bank executives said that is just the jumping in point and not the sole purpose for getting back into lending.

?

?We?re not going into [the commercial real estate] market with just a bet that we?re just doing multifamily,? said Kirk W. Walters, senior executive vice president and CFO of People?s United Financial Inc. ?Certainly multifamily will be in the mix, it will be one of the things we?ll be doing, but we?ll be doing all types of commercial real estate.?
?It?s a business that we expect that we?re going to build out, one that will be relationship oriented, and that we do have a good strong history on the commercial real estate side, but also other products and offerings that we?ll be able to lever in that market,? Walters said.
Nor are banks looking at just financing existing properties for investors.
Doyle L. Arnold, vice chairman and CFO of Zions Bancorporation, said the bank expects to see some growth in its construction and development category over the next several quarters.
?Most of the new construction loan commitments are in Class A apartment buildings,? Arnold said. ?Our multifamily lending continues to be the largest growth category or strongest growth category, up to about 10% annualized growth in the last six months.?
Peter S. Ho, chairman, president and CEO of Bank of Hawaii, said in ?commercial real estate and construction lending, we?re actually up 5.6% year-on-year which is about the level that we think we can be looking at in the environment that we?re in today. So, I think commercial has some upside, certainly that?s what we?re seeing in the pipeline.?
James E. Rohr, chairman and CEO of PNC Financial Services Group, multifamily construction has been a big play this year but also sees the strength of the CRE market not in the product type per se but more in the borrowers.
?A lot of different REITs that are in [the market] have basically moved to quality. A lot of the foreign banks have moved away from that market, and clearly the quality that our bank ? and the calling effort and the history I think has worked very well for us in that space,? Rohr said. ?There has been some CMBS refinancing, and I think that?s going to continue for the next two or three years.?
Rene F. Jones, executive vice president and CFO of M&T Bank Corp., said most of the improvement in the CRE space ?has lot to do with the low [interest] rate environment.?
?We are finding that we are able to either restructure or workout transactions more favorably than we might have thought,? Jones said. ?And part of that is because other lenders or the markets are actually willing to sort of step in.?
Banks also said the market has turned in their favor in regards to their foreclosed properties and distressed loans.
?We?ve continued to execute our strategy to aggressively liquidate foreclosed real estate,? said Clarke R. Starnes, chief risk officer and senior executive vice president for BB&T Corp.
?This is having a very positive impact on reducing nonperforming assets and related credit costs and certainly contributing to higher earnings growth.
This quarter, we decreased foreclosed real estate $157 million or 41.5% compared to Q1. And since the second quarter of last year, foreclosed real estate is down $926 million or nearly 81%. As these balances are now down to $221 million, and we continue to be aggressive in our disposition as we go into the third quarter, we think we?ll effectively complete the targeted OREO strategy in the next couple of quarters.
William Hartmann, chief credit officer of KeyCorp, said there is a tremendous amount of liquidity in the market and that is presenting more opportunities for the bank.
?We have had some performing but criticized loans where we?ve received some reverse inquiries from people who were willing to purchase those at relatively close to par,? Hartmann said. ?The accounting for that requires that, since there is a slight discount to our carrying value, that we actually move those into nonperforming in order to account for that discount ? that discount does flow through the net charge-offs, and then we could actually sell the assets.?

3RDEGREE The Long Division music review by Mellotron Storm

4 stars 3RD DEGREE are back ! It's hard to believe that it's been some 3 1/2 years since i reviewed their previous album "Narrow-Caster". I remember well thinking at the time that it was very refreshing and uplifting, a mood changer for sure. Some of it was a little poppy but it was so darn good that i had to give it 4 stars. To be honest i've gone back to it several times just to see if that rating held up and it always does. Well more of the same here folks only i believe this is even better. I had been listening to this all last week and i broke it out to review it last night and right away with the first song i was singing along and feeling moved. As per usual it's about the clever and humerous lyrics combined with an amazing singer and killer instrumental work.

"Your Fooling Yourself" is a song i just love ! What a vocal performance too. I really like the contrasts between the chorus and the verses. A guitar solo before 2 1/2 minutes. And how good does this song sound 4 1/2 minutes in. Incredible ! "Exit Strategy" has a good solid sound to it then the vocals come in and lead as the sound settles back. It becomes so uplifting here and again before 4 minutes. "The Socio-Economic Petri Dish" opens with samples of what sounds like the Stock Market or chaos might be a good word for it. The music kicks in but we can still hear the commotion a while longer. Powerful, crisp drumming, chunky bass, guitar expressions and synths lead the way. It picks up 1 1/2 minutes in and the vocals follow after 2 minutes. This reminds me of STEELY DAN. Nice instrumental section after 4 minutes. The song ends like it began with chaos. This is unusual but the first three tracks here are my top three for this album. You can all go home now(haha). "Incoherant Ramblings" has a good beat with vocals leading the way. I like the section before 5 minutes, it reminds me of BEARDFISH.

"The Ones To Follow" has strummed guitar, vocals and backing vocals then it kicks in but these contrasts will continue. Big finish. "A Work Of Art" is a cool song as we get piano, vocals, flute and sax all helping out. "Televised" is a great track. Piano leads as other sounds come and go. Drums take over after 1 1/2 minutes as we get a heavy sound. It kicks in with vocals. Great sound ! It settles back but not for long. Check out the vocals after 4 minutes and the bass too. "The Millions Of Last Moments" is a short piece with acoustic guitar melodies throughout. "Memetic Pandemic" opens with piano as reserved vocals join in. It picks up and turns fuller as contrasts continue. "A Nihilist's Dream" is laid back with vocals and it has a cool chorus.

Without question i highly recommend this one to anyone looking for intelligent lyrics and incredible instrumental work. And as a bonus we get a singer who sounds like he's having the time of his life, and he's contagious.

RH Bill Revealing Stastics and Cold Hard Cash | My Family Health ...

If you think those pictures of Filipinas on Google Images today in 2012 are too sexy for their own reproductive good? imagine how much sexier our grand mothers were in the 1960s?

RH Bill 2012? aka Responsible Parenthood? aka Population Control? because the main idea, the thesis is that Filipino women are multiplying exorbitantly like rabbits and these Filipino women be taught ?Reproductive Health? which has everything to do with contraception? or how not to make babies? condoms, pills, injectables, IUDs, patches and ligation to clamp down on the Filipina oozing sexuality over fertile charms? to save on building more classrooms as President NoyNoy just said in his SONA 2012.

Filipinas are too sexy for their own good

Filipinas are too sexy for their own good? they reproduce like rabbits. This is why they must be slapped with the RH Bill and every contraceptive arsenal available? now to be called ?essential medicines.?

If you think those pictures of Filipinas on Google Images today in 2012 are too sexy for their own reproductive good? imagine how much sexier our grand mothers were in the 1960s with 7+ children per woman on a NATIONAL AVERAGE at that time! Oooohhh lala grandmas!

Let?s begin with again the thesis and holy grail of RH Bill supporters, that Filipinos are being allegedly DENIED access to contraception:

?In the Philippines, access to contraceptives is limited for the most part to those with the means to pay. The Catholic Church has fought a ?reproductive health bill? in the legislature that would change that.? ? http://soc.li/84DB5Wi

Along with the heart warming example:

But after her third child was born, the mayor of Manila ? with the blessing of Roman Catholic bishops ? halted the distribution of contraceptives at public clinics to promote ?a culture of life.? The order put birth control pills and other contraceptives out of reach for millions of poor Filipinos, who could not afford to buy them at private pharmacies.

?For us, the banning of the pills was ugly,? Naz said. ?We were the ones who suffered.?

At 36, she had more children than teeth, common for poor women after repeated pregnancies and breast-feeding.

Going to the discussion I had over in Facebook, this is how it went:

Is this single example true for the entire population of Metro Manila?

I said:

?Total Fertility Rate of women in Metro Manila these days is around 1.5 to 1.7 children per woman. Replacement TFR is 2.3 for a developing country. Meaning Metro Manila is BELOW TFR in 2012. The example given is the statistical insignificant oddity. Double check with the NSO for factual fertility stats. Billions of pesos to be spent needs to match with statistical facts, not figments of the imagination.?

And an RH Bill supporter said:

?Pretty sure the example you?ve given is the oddity Edwin. Total Philippines TFR is pretty well double the Manila figure.

Meanwhile, when I lived in Cebu I found that compared to other countries I?ve lived, buying contraceptives was unnecessarily difficult and embarrassing. Happy to go into details if you?d like.?

So of course I went on to REVEAL STATISTICS to show this alleged NATIONWIDE Philippine ?embarrassing statistics?? Let?s see now shall we?

Click http://goo.gl/rAOLa to Google for ?fertility growth rate Philippines? and the first result shows the graph of the total fertility rate of the Philippines from 1960 to 2010? FIFTY (50) solid years of statistics.

TFR Philippines 1960 to 2010: 7, 6, 5, 4, 3

TFR Philippines 1960 to 2010: 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 according to the World Bank and graphed by Google. Look at that slope. It?s a straight line, get a ruler to extrapolate the next 10 years and the next 20 years. And this is without any RH Bill.

Did you see the pretty slope? Without the EXPENSIVE RH BIll, the slope of TFR is TRUE and SURE. It is downwards? 7+, 6, 5, 4, 3? NATIONALLY. And 3.0 TFR is not so far away from replacement level of 2.3 for a developing country? right? It is GREAT that figures like this are now PUBLIC.

So where is the MATH RATIONAL for a multi-BILLION peso expensive RH Bill when the hard statistics show that women are indeed CONTRACEPTING IMMENSELY and ASSUREDLY? Aren?t depopulation supporters HAPPY with the GRAPH of true and sure downward TFR?

1. Are depopulation supporters UNHAPPY with the DOWNWARD SLOPE of the TFR?

2. Are the depopulation supporters UNAWARE of this very public TFR graph?

3. Don?t you think all that Multi Billion Pesos you wish to SPEND on a SURE WHITE ELEPHANT called the RH BILL be put to better use for more WORTHY endeavours where STATISTICAL STUDIES actually support the NEED?

RH Bill supporters should stop being fixated with religion and Catholicism. The main issue is STATISTICS, Numbers, Graphs, Peso Costs? Benefit. Just like a real CEO of a company needs solid justifications for massive multi-billion peso investments. The graphs DO NOT show the worthiness of spending BILLIONS of PESOS on a desired outcome that has ALREADY BEEN ACHIEVED. That of suppressing / clamping down / dampening of the sexy Filipinas appeal for skin to skin real sex.

Since the TFR is already assuredly sliding down lower and lower from 7 6 5 4 3? you depopulation fans probably need to give yourselves a pat on the back that yes? all the USAID funding for population control since the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s have been truly effective. The contraception education saturation is already a complete success. It is time to move on to more worthy projects that BILLIONS of pesos will SOLVE.

This has been a public service message to present a rational discussion in place of Anti-Catholic hysteria.
