Pamper Your Pets in Englewood Saturday

Englewood, Fla. -- Pamper your pet and help other furry friends Saturday, September 29th at the Englewood Animal Rescue Sanctuary.

Englewood Animal Rescue Sanctuary (EARS) will host their Pampered Pets event. This offers local residents cost-effective pet care services from grooming to micro-chipping. The event will take place at the EARS Store and Adoption Center at 145 W. Dearborn Street, Englewood, from 10am to 4pm.

Because of its success EARS has decided to offer this service to the community on the last Saturday of every month. All proceeds from this monthly event will go directly towards caring for the animals that are rescued by EARS.

The public is offered microchipping, pet bathing, nail clipping and professional grooming at reduced prices for each service. An overall pet evaluation will be offered for free and customers can then choose which services they want. Only the professional grooming requires an appointment. These appointments may be made by calling 941-681-3877 or by stopping in at the store. Customers can also purchase a cold drink and shop the on-site thrift store while their pets are being pampered.

DISH to Launch Satellite Internet - Zacks.com

DISH Network Corp.(DISH - Analyst Report) ? the second largest satellite TV operator in the U.S., has announced to launch satellite-based broadband service in the rural U.S. market starting from October, this year. DISH Network will become the first satellite TV provider in the U.S. to provide satellite net services in the rural areas as arch rival DIRECTV (DTV - Analyst Report) plans to launch similar services in 2013.

Bundled with its popular satellite TV packages, the 10GB data plan will offer a download/upload speed of 5/1 Mbps and will charge its customers $39.99 per month. Customers can upgrade to a higher 20GB data plan, which provides a download/upload speed of 10/1 Mbps and costs upto $49.99. New and existing bundled customers will save $10 per month and won?t have to provide any installation charge, while stand alone customers have to pay an upfront fee of $99.

The company will use a satellite of EchoStar Corp. (SATS - Snapshot Report) to deliver this service. DISH Network is already providing satellite Internet service using the network of ViaSat Inc. (VSAT - Snapshot Report) in certain parts of the U.S. particularly in the West Coast. Both the existing and new services will be offered under the dishNET brand. According to Federal Communication Commission (FCC) 14.5 million rural people doesn?t have access to high speed internet. The Englewood, Colorado-based company is trying to capture 2 million new customers with these services.

We believe, with the launch of this service DISH network will become a formidable challenger to large cable pay-TV and telecom service providers, which also offers triple-play video, voice, and data services. Furthermore, the launch of this service will allow it to diversify as the U.S. satellite market is already saturated.

Additionally, DISH Network is currently waiting for the FCC nod to launch a nationwide high-speed wireless broadband network to offer mobile Internet and phone services to its customers. If the company gets the green signal from FCC to use its airwaves then the company can offer a unique quad-play bundled service of satellite TV; satellite Internet, mobile Internet, and mobile phone services.

The current Zacks Consensus Estimate for Dish Network Corp. is pegged at 55 cents for the third quarter with a growth rate estimate of (22.63%). For 2012 and 2013, the Zacks Consensus Estimates stand at $2.43 and $2.50 with a growth rate of (16.08%) and 3.21%, respectively.

Recommendation:

Currently, DISH Network has a Zacks #3 Rank, implying a short-term Hold rating on the stock. We are also maintaining our long-term Neutral recommendation on the company?s shares.

What Is A Workforce Computing Strategic Plan...And Why Do You ...

Regardless of what our minds conjure up when we think of airline travel, one thing we can readily observe is that while the weather, the experience of the flight crew, the mechanical condition of the aircraft, and the destination of the flight are all variables, the system?of getting an aircraft from one place to another, in one piece, is extraordinarily reliable. Herb Kelleher of Southwest Airlines once joked that the airline business is the only place where the capital assets travel at 500 miles per hour.

Every commercial flight starts with a flight plan, a flight crew, an aircraft, and a destination. The dispatcher creates the plan based on the expected conditions for the flight, the limitations of the pilot and passengers, and the capabilities of the aircraft. Time is built into the plan to climb to cruise altitude and to descend again to reach the destination safely. How much fuel will be required is built into the plan and pumped into the tanks. Every activity is done to achieve a singular purpose: getting the aircraft and its passengers safely to the destination, and everyone involved knows where the destination is. Aviation is a study in viable systems design.

How strange it seems then, that thousands of IT projects begin every day, but more than one-third of them crash enroute. Why? I would argue that it's because there is seldom a clear destination in mind, a rational plan to get there, or a viable system approach?in place to execute the plan. Most of the time, the destination and the means to get there are only vague estimates, and the elements of the strategy are rooted in hope.

A viable system approach is the inspiration behind Forrester's Workforce Computing Strategic Plan research. A viable system for workforce computing requires five things:

  • A clear understanding of the aim of the organization.
  • A clear understanding of how each project will help to achieve the aim of the organization.
  • A clear understanding of the destination for each project.
  • Organizations capable of reaching the intended destinations.
  • A clear definition of the?system?needed to reach each destination.
    ?

W. Edwards Deming, widely credited as the father of the Japanese quality movement, said it best: "If you can't describe what you're doing as a process, you don't know what you're doing." Every activity must be a step in a sequence of events intended to achieve a clear purpose.

How does it apply to your IT organization and workforce computing specifically? If the aim of your organization is to become the largest provider of farm equipment in the world, and the core business strategy to reach the goal is to provide the highest quality farm tractors at the lowest possible cost, then every workforce computing initiative must be evaluated and prioritized based on how well it will help employees achieve the business strategy and reach the business' destination. Further, each project must begin with a close look at the conditions outside, a clear understanding of the capabilities of the organization, the limitations of the equipment, and agreement that the destination is truly within reach. Anything less creates a corrosive culture of mistrust and systemic failure. Culture is the responsibility of leadership.

Hope is not a strategy. The more your organization knows about the conditions outside, the more that people are encouraged to learn and prepare, the more understanding they have of the aim of the business and how their work contributes, the more accurate the strategic planning, the more reliable the execution, and the more rewarding it will be for the people involved. Competitive advantage doesn't come from reactive cultures; it comes from awareness, deliberate action, and careful sculpting of organizational and human capabilities to achieve what your competitors cannot. Most of all, it requires executive leaders who understand systems thinking and who are capable of crafting organizational systems to achieve the aim of the business.

Is the aim of your business clear and the goals within the capabilities of the people and equipment you have? Is your current workforce computing strategy focused clearly on helping employees achieve the goals of the business, or is it centered on other priorities such as security, control, and lowest cost? Is your VDI project headed for failure from the start, or is there a viable system in place to reach a clear destination? If in doubt, you need a workforce computing strategic plan.

Save More Using Daily Deals Websites

Ideally, one should not have to expend a great deal of one?s comforts because, ideally, one will have shed one?s corporeality and become one with the stars themselves. But for those among us who have not become so enlightened, a careful budget must be maintained. Where possible, you need to carefully count your coppers, areas and yes, even human teeth, spending them only when the best bargain is in your favor. This is the reason why it?s important to buy carefully and to find out how to get local deals from local enterprises on the internet.

If you are like me, you wake up every morning and avoid the mirror for fear of what skulks behind the glass. You slink through your corridor and downstairs to the fridge, looking for something left over from the black mass the night before. The blood of the black goat is succulent fresh, but it is not something you would like to try after it?s been sitting cold for a few hours. That empty fridge ( zealots always have such a forceful appetite, literally and figuratively ) stares back at you, and you have to, once more, head out to the store for groceries. This is our day, in these tough times. Between utilities, gas for your car and payoffs to shady police officers to pay no attention to the occasional noise complaint or missing virgin, your wallet is getting stretched a bit thin. Rather than despairing and giving into the black voice that drives you to your dark god, boot up the computer and hop online to find some local bargains.

Many coupon websites will have deals for key shopping chains, be they grocery stores, hardware or electronics. It?s a brilliant way to shave off a couple of bucks from that bill when you need to stock up for the orgy or want to beef up home security to avoid any prying eyes. Beyond the essentials in your everyday life, there are commonly a number of deals for the minor luxuries. Is your personal computer slowing down due to superseded hardware or the crushing burden of working on your records in a language never supposed to be known by man? Look up vouchers for Best Buy or 6th Ave Electronics. You can generally find a pretty decent deal for a lovely laptop PC or, if you?re old-fashioned like me, a good desktop. If you don?t do any major traveling with your computer, the desktops do have a tendency to run a little less expensive at the price of portability. My personal favorite site is TigerDirect.com. They have a wide variety of renovated gear, but don?t let that fool you. Infrequently hand-me-downs are the most trustworthy of gear. Ask any person who?s ever required inherited silver to open the Gates of Leng.

Your life is yours to live, till the Great Old Ones arise and claim what you have pledged to them for their maddening secrets. You have to make sure you can live that life as well as is practical to provide for your family. By buying local deals online, you can not only save money, but promote industrial growth in your hometown.

Daily deals websites are good example of simple and easy approach of internet business. Learn more about Toronto daily deals or local daily deals in your city. However, here you are able to find hot daily deals Toronto.

Orange honey madeleines

Transport yourself to the French countryside with these simple and delicate little cakes.

By Megan Fizell,?Feasting on Art / September 27, 2012

Madeleines, which originated in France, are small sponge cakes. They are made in the shape of a shell by using a special pan.

Feasting on Art

This post has been a long time coming. Between a few freelance writing projects and my?curatorial debut, I have had very little free time left to finish this post. Plus I have managed to forget butter the last three times I went grocery shopping. Without it, these pretty madeleines would have been very sad tasting. A madeleine is a small sponge cake that hails from the northeast of France ? the Lorraine region to be exact. The cakes are distinctive for their shell-like appearance and are made with a dedicated pan especially for madeleines, available at most home-ware shops.

Vincent van Gogh?composed "Still Life with Basket and Six Oranges"?in 1888 while he was in Arles-sur-tech, France. At this time he adopted a brighter palette and his paintings were saturated with yellow, ultramarine and mauve. The still life above epitomizes the natural vibrant light of the landscapes in the region. The sun-drenched fields and azure water of the Mediterranean are echoed in the background of the painting.

Adapted from?Bon App?tit
Yield: 16 madeleines

3/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/3 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1/3 cup sugar
2 tablespoons honey
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon orange zest
5 tablespoons butter, melted

In?a bowl, add the flour, baking powder and salt ? mix well. In another bowl, beat the eggs and sugar together for around 4 minutes. Add the honey, vanilla and orange zest to the egg mixture and mix well. Slowly fold in the flour mixture and once incorporated, add the melted butter and gently mix.

Preheat?the oven to 400 degrees?F.,?and position a rack in the center. Prepare the madeleine molds by rubbing a bit of butter in each one. Drop around 1 tablespoon of batter in each mold and slide into the oven for around 7-10 minutes. Once they appear golden, test to see if they are done by poking a toothpick in the centre of the madeleines, when it comes out clean they are done.

When?removing the madeleines from the oven, quickly remove them from the pan, do not let them sit and continue to cook. Serve either warm or at room-temperature.

WELL?.Getting closer to Augusta seeing the light ? Health ...

In June of 2010 it was discovered that patient(s) that had been at Acadia Hospital for treatment were having lots of issues arise in the court system and with CPS ( DHHS )?It appeared that these two places were remaining a little to close.

It has been a long drawn out process to open Augusta?s eyes to this..However, things are in the works now for Augusta to realize this. I cant wait to actually not worry about this issue. It appears that disadvantaged people (? disabled?) ( I personally do not like that word?) may have had to toe the line unlike other non disadvantaged people. I believe that lots of things will happen in the coming year(s) with these groups of people, I know that Thursday at 1:30PM at the Disability Rights Center in Augusta is Hosting a Candidates Forum with Governor Angus King, State Senator Cynthia Dill and Secretary of State Charlie Summers the info about that can be obtained by calling: Rick Langley at 1.800.452.1948 at the Disability Rights Center. ? This Senate race has received national attention ? the Washington Post referred to it as ?the most important Senate race of the year? ? and this forum offers a powerful opportunity for people with disabilities to impact the policy debate.

Please join us for this important event!

This forum is sponsored by the Disability Rights Center together with the Maine Developmental Disabilities Council, Alpha One, Speaking Up For Us, Advocacy Initiative Network of Maine, Consumer Council System of Maine, Maine Parent Federation, STRIVE, Iris Network, Maine Center on Deafness, Southern Maine Parent Awareness, Autism Society of Maine, GEAR Parent Network, Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies, and Maine APSE.

Ahmadinejad nears last U.N. speech: Expect a doozy

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad takes his final bow at the United Nations this week, and he?s likely to go out more like a lion than a lamb.

The global provocateur may be winding up his second and final term as president in dispute with Iran?s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and held in low esteem by the Iranian public as Iran?s economy falters under tough international sanctions.

But if his first comments after landing in New York for this week?s UN General Assembly are any indication, Mr. Ahmadinejad can be expected to outrage again when he speaks Wednesday from the UN podium.

RECOMMENDED: 7 most controversial UN speeches, from Ahmadinejad to Khrushchev

Speaking to reporters Monday, Ahmadinejad dismissed Israel as having ?no roots in [Middle Eastern] history? and ridiculed Israel?s threats to launch air strikes against Iran?s nuclear facilities. ?We do not take seriously the threats of the Zionists,? he said. ?We have all the defensive means at our disposal, and we are ready to defend ourselves.?

Prospects for surprise Israeli military action against Iran have roiled US-Israel relations in recent weeks, with President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu openly disputing whether it?s time for military action. Some foreign policy experts predict Israel will reluctantly wait until after US elections for clearer support from the US. In the meantime, they say, Ahmadinejad is using the threat of attack to trot out his trademark bravado while trying to boost his standing at home.

On the international stage, Ahmadinejad continues to present himself as the defender of a new world order that would give emerging powers ? and in particular Muslim counties ? their due. Earlier this month, he hosted a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Tehran.

On Monday, the Iranian president addressed a high-level UN meeting on the rule of law ? an appearance that drew howls of protest from human-rights advocates. Human rights in Iran have deteriorated further since the regime violently put down the country?s ?green revolution? in 2009, rights promoters say. They also cite the plight of religious minorities, homosexuals, and dissidents in Iran.

Ahmadinejad used his time at the UN meeting to sound a moderate note, insisting that Iran?s nuclear program is for peaceful, civilian purposes. He also said that time has not run out on diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis ? leaving him sounding a bit like Mr. Obama, who insists that the diplomatic window, while narrowing, has not yet closed.

As usual, Ahmadinejad's visit to the US is causing a stir. The US group United Against Nuclear Iran every year tries to ?shame" New York hotels into slamming their doors in the Iranian leader?s face ? and is as busy as ever mounting anti-Ahmadinejad protests this year, too.

In a bit of a if-you-can?t-beat-'em-join-?em move, UANI has set up its command post in the Warwick Hotel ? after failing to convince the West 54th Street establishment to deny the Iranian a room. It planned to hold an anti-Ahmadinejad rally outside the hotel Monday afternoon, joining a list of organizations that plan to hold similar events ? including outside the UN on Wednesday, when Ahmadinejad speaks.

Diversity, distribution of cutthroat trout in Colorado clarified

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? A novel genetic study led by the University of Colorado Boulder has helped to clarify the native diversity and distribution of cutthroat trout in Colorado, including the past and present haunts of the federally endangered greenback cutthroat trout.

The study, led by CU-Boulder postdoctoral researcher Jessica Metcalf, was based largely on DNA samples taken from cutthroat trout specimens preserved in ethanol in several U.S. museums around the country that were collected from around the state as far back as 150 years ago. The new study, in which Metcalf and her colleagues extracted mitochondrial DNA from fish to sequence genes of the individual specimens and compared them with modern-day cutthroat trout strains, produced some startling results.

The biggest surprise, said Metcalf, was that the cutthroat trout native to the South Platte River drainage appears to survive today only in a single population outside of its native range -- in a small stream known as Bear Creek that actually is in the nearby Arkansas River drainage. The strain from Bear Creek is thought to have been collected from the South Platte River drainage in the 1880s by an early hotelier who stocked the fish in a pond at the Bear Creek headwaters to help promote an early tourist route up Pikes Peak.

"We thought one way to get to the question of which cutthroat trout strains are native to particular drainages was to go back to historical samples and use their DNA as a baseline of information," said Metcalf of the chemistry and biochemistry department and a former postdoctoral researcher at the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA. "Our study indicates the descendants of the fish that were stocked into Bear Creek in the late 1800s are the last remaining representatives of the federally protected greenback cutthroat trout."

A second, key set of data was all of the Colorado cutthroat trout stocking records over the past 150 years, a task spearheaded by study co-author and fish biologist Chris Kennedy of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Between 1889 and 1925, for example, the study showed that more than 50 million cutthroat trout from the Gunnison and Yampa river basins were stocked in tributaries of all major drainages in the state, jumbling the picture of native cutthroat strains in Colorado through time and space.

Originating from the Pacific Ocean, cutthroat trout are considered one of the most diverse fish species in North America and evolved into 14 recognized subspecies in western U.S. drainages over thousands of years. In Colorado, four lineages of cutthroats were previously identified: the greenback cutthroat, the Colorado River cutthroat, the Rio Grande cutthroat and the extinct yellowfin cutthroat.

The museum specimens used in the study came from the California Academy of Sciences, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia and the Harvard University Museum of Comparative Zoology. Colorado cutthroat trout specimens were collected by a number of early naturalists, including Swiss scientist and former Harvard Professor Louis Agassiz and internationally known fish expert and founding Stanford University President David Starr Jordan.

The new study, published online?September 24 in Molecular Ecology, follows up on a 2007 study by Metcalf and her team that indicated there were several places on the Front Range where cutthroat populations thought to be greenbacks by fish biologists were actually a strain of cutthroats transplanted from Colorado's Western Slope in the early 1900s.

Other co-authors on the new study included CU-Boulder Professor Andrew Martin and CU-Boulder graduate students Sierra Stowell, Daniel McDonald and Kyle Keepers; Colorado Parks and Wildlife biologist Kevin Rogers; University of Adelaide scientists Alan Cooper and Jeremy Austin; and Janet Epp of Pisces Molecular LLC of Boulder.

"With the insight afforded by the historical data, we now know with a great deal of certainty what cutthroat trout strains were here in Colorado before greenbacks declined in the early 20th century," said Martin of CU's ecology and evolutionary biology department. "And we finally know what a greenback cutthroat trout really is."

Metcalf and her colleagues first collected multiple samples of tissue and bone from each of the ethanol-pickled trout specimens, obtaining fragments of DNA that were amplified and then pieced together like a high-tech jigsaw puzzle to reveal two genes of the individual specimens. The tests were conducted on two different continents under highly sterile conditions and each DNA sequencing effort was repeated several times for many specimens to ensure accuracy in the study, Metcalf said.

Roughly half of the study was conducted at CU-Boulder and half at the Australian Center for Ancient DNA at the University of Adelaide, where Metcalf had worked for two years. "By conducting repeatable research at two very different, state-of-the-art laboratories, we were able to show the Bear Creek trout was the same strain as the cutthroats originally occupying the South Platte River drainage."

The Bear Creek trout strain is now being propagated in the Colorado Parks and Wildlife hatchery system and at the USFWS Leadville National Fish Hatchery.

In addition to identifying the Bear Creek cutthroat trout, Metcalf and her colleagues discovered a previously unknown cutthroat strain native to the San Juan Basin in southwestern Colorado that has since gone extinct. The study also confirmed that the yellowfin cutthroat, a subspecies from the Arkansas River headwaters that grew to prodigious size in Twin Lakes near Leadville, also had gone extinct.

Fortunately, most fish preserved by naturalists before 1900 were "fixed" in ethanol, which makes it easier for researchers to obtain reliable DNA than from fish preserved in a formaldehyde solution, a practice that later became popular. Prior to the new study -- which included DNA from specimens up to about 150 years old -- scientists working in ancient DNA labs had only performed similar research on ethanol-preserved museum vertebrate specimens less than 100 years old.

"One of the exciting things to come from this research project is that it opens up the potential for scientists to sequence the genes of other fish, reptiles and amphibian specimens preserved in ethanol further back in time than ever before to answer ecological questions about past diversity and distribution," said Metcalf, who conducts her research at CU's BioFrontiers Institute.

Funding for the study was provided by agencies of the Greenback Cutthroat Trout Recovery Team, including the USFWS, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service and Trout Unlimited.

"I think in many cases success depends less on the application of a new technology and more on the convergence of people with shared interest and complementary skills necessary for solving difficult problems," said Martin. "Our greenback story is really one about what can be discovered when dedicated and talented people collaborate with a shared purpose."

"We've known for some time that the trout in Bear Creek were unique," said Doug Krieger, senior aquatic biologist for Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Greenback Cutthroat Trout Recovery Team leader. "But we didn't realize they were the only surviving greenback population."

The decline of native cutthroats in Colorado occurred because of a combination of pollution, overfishing and stocking of native and non-native species of trout, said Metcalf. "It's ironic that stocking nearly drove the greenback cutthroat trout to extinction, and a particularly early stocking event actually saved it from extinction," she said.

U.S. clears path for more sanctions on Iran oil deals

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government officially linked Iran's state oil company to the country's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Monday, a determination that enables Washington to apply new sanctions on foreign banks dealing with the company.

The Treasury Department determined that the National Iranian Oil Company, one of the world's largest oil exporters, is "an agent or affiliate" of the IRGC, which the United States has long put under sanctions for terrorism and human rights abuses.

The U.S. Congress directed Treasury to determine whether Iran's oil and tanker companies were linked to the IRGC as part of a new package of sanctions signed into law in August.

Adam Szubin, the head of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, told Congress in a letter that the IRGC's influence has grown in the oil company, a petroleum and natural gas producer based in Tehran, and throughout Iran's energy sector.

Iran's elite guard force has recently been coordinating a campaign to sell Iranian oil in an effort to evade Western sanctions, specifically the EU's Iranian oil embargo that went into force in July, the Treasury Department said.

But Szubin said there was not enough information at this time to conclude that the National Iranian Tanker Company was also linked to the IRGC.

Senator Robert Menendez, a Democrat who helped craft the sanctions law, urged the Obama administration to continue investigating whether Iran's elite guards are linked to the oil tanker company.

U.S. backers of sanctions applauded the ruling, part of Washington's wider net of oil-related sanctions aimed at choking funding to Iran's nuclear program. The West says Iran is developing weapons, but Tehran says its nuclear program is purely for civilian purposes.

"Oil transactions with NIOC directly support the IRGC's role in Iran's nuclear-weapons program and its support for terrorism," Representative Howard Berman, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said in a statement.

NOT WORTH THE DOWNSIDE

While U.S. companies already are prohibited from buying Iranian oil, the new determination means the United States can impose further sanctions on any foreign bank that facilitates transactions with NIOC, according to the sanctions law.

But the new penalties will not apply to countries that have been granted "exceptions," or waivers, to the sanctions because they have significantly cut their purchases of Iranian oil.

The United States this year issued 180-day waivers for all of Iran's major crude buyers. This month it renewed waivers for Japan and 10 EU countries, while exceptions for China and India are due to be reviewed in coming months.

A sanctions lawyer said the determination could make foreign banks skittish about taking on business that while technically allowed, could hurt ties with the U.S. government or U.S. banks.

"To me, the more significant impact is the stigmatization of NIOC," said Behn Dayanim, a lawyer with Axinn, Veltrop & Harkrider LLP in Washington who advises clients on U.S. sanctions law.

"The upside isn't worth the downside if you actually end up inadvertently committing a violation," Dayanim said in an interview. (Editing by James Dalgleish and Mohammad Zargham)
