Improved Business Communication Services During Phone ...

A third (36%) of United Kingdom (UK) workers have had company telephone failures caused by factors such as flooding, power cuts, road works and equipment faults during the past year.

This is the main finding of a new study commissioned by a hosted Voice over IP (VoIP) provider, and of those respondents, 60% had experienced up to a full day?s phone disruption, costing them an average of ?14,431 per day. To achieve improved business communication services, a hosted VoIP solution can be the answer to sustaining communication between company and client during times when a regular phone would fail.

The potential cost to businesses of such an unforeseen disaster can be enormous. For example, more than a quarter of people questioned (26%) were unable to take incoming work calls during telephone downtime and resorted to using their mobiles instead, and could thus incur typically higher mobile costs. Despite the disruptions and company telephone failures causing huge losses of capital, 61% of businesses had no disaster recovery plans to address the issue.

This research comes a year after severe flooding caused havoc for businesses in many parts of the UK.

Hosted VoIP Solution

By replacing a traditional Private Branch Exchange (PBX) telephone system with a hosted VoIP solution, telephone calls are made over the internet rather than a conventional telephone network; businesses can divert all calls off-site should an unforeseen disaster strike. Alternatively, firms can keep their existing PBX and connect a hosted VoIP solution too, ensuring they have a back-up plan in place should one network fail.

The nature of a hosted VoIP solution means that business can be done as usual because calls can be easily diverted to home phones, mobiles or other offices ? giving the company the ability to continue functioning from a different location and benefit from such improved business communications services. Despite this, nearly two thirds of those questioned (61%) weren?t aware of a plan to deal with disruption to incoming calls caused by events beyond their control. Worryingly, more than a quarter (26%) said they couldn?t be contacted or didn?t know how customers or suppliers would contact them during times of phone outage.

The Importance of Having a Plan B

Surprisingly, the survey revealed that one in four people (25%) still rely on their fax machine as a viable communication method with customers if their telephone system goes down. However, when fax machines operate using a central office phone service, this is not a workable solution to the problem. All too many companies seem to disregard the threat of unforeseen circumstances and factors, and then feel regret when experiencing company telephone failures and losing tens of thousands of pounds per day and upsetting their client base.

Businesses need to reassess the value of being able to maintain a reliable telephony solution during adverse circumstances. Communication is the foundation of all successful businesses, yet companies are failing to put as much emphasis on ensuring that their phone system is as protected from downtime as they put on other areas such as network and data access. Commercial company telephones with failures and are out of service have costs which build quickly and the daily financial damage potential to a company is massive due to lack of business communication with clients.

Family as community

Recently 18 million viewers on YouTube witnessed one very frustrated father take a 45 caliber pistol to his 15 year old daughters? laptop.

Without going into a lot of detail, his daughter had expressed outraged feelings of oppression and exploitation regarding her roles and responsibilities within her family?s household. Attempting to conceal her full self-expression from her family?s eyes, she posted her outrage and expose on Facebook. The result was innocent technology very publicly sacrificed upon the altar of parental frustration and anger.

The resulting and viral YouTube video was her father?s attempt to deal with his feelings of disrespect, outrage and exploitation. His dramatic response generated a careful visit from child protective services that discovered that children were indeed safe and that all guns were safely kept in the home.

But what if there had been another way to handle the family dynamics such that all participants were fully aware of their relationship to one another and then signed willingly on to do their part?

Our role as parents is to grow the capacities of our children step by step until they are fully prepared to leave our nest and fulfill their responsibilities as adults.

What that means for parents of teenagers is that they need to transition from being the directors of their children?s lives, entirely appropriate for children up to adolescence, to being the producers of their teenage children?s lives. This involves a carefully thought out and planned restructuring of family roles and responsibilities that allows for honor and respect for all parties while providing a safe nurturing environment in which teenagers may grow.

In the case of mutually outraged dads, moms, sons and daughters I urge families to step back and restructure their home as a family community of adults and near-adults with all roles and responsibilities clearly distinguished, divided, and agreed upon by all parties.

What there is to do is to hold a family council ad talk to one another, parents and teenagers, asking the following questions.
Now that all members are growing up:

? What is a family as a community?
? What does it take to run one successfully?
? What are the roles and responsibilities of all members?
? What is your, my, and our part in all of the above?

Had the daughter been invited into that conversation she may very well have:

? Felt honored as the near-adult she is becoming.
? Gratified that she was invited into an adult-level conversation
? Had an opportunity to express her views and her treated with respect.
? Chosen, after negotiation, which roles and responsibilities she was prepared to sign on and commit to.

After those agreements are reached the role of parents is to help teenagers grow in integrity, expand their capacity to honor their word, which will serve them when they become fully adult.

Will there still be conflicts, some resistance, and instances of ?I don?t wannas?? Certainly.

The difference is that in a family community there is a solid foundation for mutual honor and respect that supports communication, and effectively grows the capacity for every family member to work things out amicably.

In well structured producer families there can be no need to express such total parental outrage, resentment, frustration and anger; there need never be such wounding and insulting Facebook diatribes nor 45 caliber bullets applied to innocent technology.
Don?t retaliate, communicate and then negotiate.

Everybody wins.

And I was blown away by what I discovered!

What I learned was that masculine men face two fundamental and impenetrable barriers when it comes to "doing business" with the traditional beauty industry.

Masculine Men's Skin Care Dilemma - Physical Barrier

First - the physical barrier.

I found that traditional beauty venues are very uncomfortable and not at all user friendly for men. Men in general are more practical, preferring to get in, get what's needed and get out. Most men wouldn't go into the beauty section at a department store, let alone enjoy being catered to by the ever present beauty consultant. While drugs stores and discount retailers are less daunting, the multiple aisles and dizzying array of skin care products (for women), each with their own set of claims and terminology can make finding the right (masculine skin care) products for men a very confusing and time consuming task.

As a result, men in general either do not, or will not shop for skin care products (men's skin care products) at these locations. This also makes it extremely difficult for the Beauty Industry to reach men, let alone, educate and convince them of the need and proper use of men's face care products (masculine men's skin care products).

Masculine Men's Skin Care Dilemma - Psychological Barrier

Second - the psychological barrier - that there is still significant social stigma attached to men's use of skin care a.k.a. "beauty" products.

Traditionally, beauty is accepted as a female ritual. In general, men either don't use beauty products because he doesn't think he needs them, won't use them because the idea of it is emasculating. Or if he uses them, meaning he has accepted the concept of skin care (men's skin care) as good for him, he doesn't want people to know about it, because it makes him vulnerable to ridicule by his peers.

This means that to break the psychological barrier and reverse a lifetime of social conditioning and stigma attached to a skin care routine for men (masculine men's skin care routine), the product line (masculine men's skin care product line) must serve the dual functions of appealing to men both psychologically and visually.
