Why Learning Music Is Essential For Children

There is something that many parents want to make sure that their children have available to them and that is music. When you have music in your life, you are often going to see benefits that are not available to those that do not have music in their lives. Although those benefits may differ from one individual to another, here are some of the more specific that are seen. You will be happy to know, many of these are seen, regardless of whether it is a piano lesson that is being given or if it is guitar lessons for beginners that are given to your children.

If there is one thing that is well known about any type of music lessons it is the fact that you're going to need to practice regularly. That's why many children who are taking these types of lessons have discipline that is not typically available to other children. This not only benefits them in the fact that they are able to learn to have music in their lives in a unique way, it also gives them the discipline necessary to achieve higher grades at school and even to achieve more out of their life.

Another thing that should be considered about music lessons is the fact that it can give your child some coordination as well. The dexterity that is necessary to play the guitar and the strength in the fingers that is necessary for playing the piano has been well-established. This is also something that is going to show benefit to your child throughout their entire life as well.

Of course, simply having music in your life is going to benefit you in ways that you may not understand if you did not have music in your life. Although it is certainly true that most people enjoy music, many of them tend to overlook the intricacies of the music that they are enjoying. When your child takes music lessons, they are going to learn to have an ear for those items as well as having more of an appreciation for the music that they hear.

Since it is well-established that music lessons are going to be of benefit to your child, how can you pick a music teacher who will teach your child such an important part of their lives? Actually, there are a few different considerations for this purpose. If you're going to be playing a larger instrument, such as the piano, then it is obvious that you need to choose learning at home or learning in another area. Whether or not you have a piano in your home is often going to dictate that for you. Other instruments, such as the guitar can easily be transported. You should also choose a teacher that is a comfortable fit for both you and the child. It may take a little bit of looking in order to find such a teacher but when you find them, you will find that everybody enjoys the benefits as a result.

There are two parts of a watercraft insurance contract you need to consider.

The first is your watercraft liability. I suggest at least $1,000,000 limits as the cost to go from $100,000 to $1,000,000 is not that much and you need the higher limits when on the water. The second cover is your physical damage and this can be more expensive than the third-party watercraft liability premium. Depending on the value of your boat, motor, trailer and if you want, your equipment, each insurance company will price the coverages based on their underwriting standards.

You will have to complete a watercraft liabilty application which will include questions about the waters and time of year you will be fishing.

Be sure that tournaments are included in the form. Each insurance carrier has differenct watercraft insurance policies and underwriting conditions so please question the agent about your needs.

Remember, you know what your monetary loss will be for the boat, motor, trailer and equipment. What you do not know is what your legal liability will be if you are negligent in causing an accident on the water.

Novel anti-malarial drug target identified

An international team of scientists, led by researchers from the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, have identified the first reported inhibitors of a key enzyme involved in survival of the parasite responsible for malaria. Their findings, which may provide the basis for anti-malarial drug development, are currently published in the online version of the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

Tropical malaria is responsible for more than 1.2 million deaths annually. Severe forms of the disease are mainly caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum, transmitted to humans by female Anopheles mosquitoes. Malaria eradication has not been possible due to the lack of vaccines and the parasite's ability to develop resistance to most drugs.

The researchers conducted high-throughput screening of nearly 350,000 compounds in the National Institutes of Health's Molecular Libraries Small Molecule Repository (MLSMR) to identify compounds that inhibit an enzyme which plays an important role in parasite development: Plasmodium falciparum glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (PfG6PD) is essential for proliferating and propagating P. falciparum.

"The enzyme G6PD catalyzes an initial step in a process that protects the malaria parasite from oxidative stress in red blood cells, creating an environment in which the parasite survives," said senior author Lars Bode, PhD, assistant professor in the UCSD Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatology and the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. People with a natural deficiency in this enzyme are protected from malaria and its deadly symptoms, an observation that triggered the reported research.

The parasitic form of the enzyme (PfG6PD) is what contributes the majority of G6PD activity in infected red blood cells. Because the parasite lives in the blood of a malaria-infected person, the scientists aimed at identifying compounds that inhibit the parasitic form but not the human form of the enzyme. "We didn't want to interfere with the human form of the enzyme and risk potential side effects," Bode explained.

Scientific testing had previously been limited by a lack of recombinant PfG6PD. Team members in the lab of Katja Becker, PhD, at the Interdisciplinary Research Center at Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen, Germany produced the first complete and functional recombinant PfG6PD, and researchers led by Anthony Pinkerton, PhD, at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute used it to identify the lead compound resulting from their efforts, ML276.

ML276 represents the first reported selective PfG6PD inhibitor, which stops the growth of malaria parasites in cultured red blood cells ? even those parasites that developed resistance to currently available drugs. "ML276 is a very promising basis for future drug design of new anti-malarial therapeutics," said Bode.

Lap Band Surgery: Jets Coach Rex Ryan's Weight-Loss Procedure, Explained

Jets head coach Rex Ryan announced yesterday that, thanks to lap band surgery, he's now tipping the scales at 242 -- 106 pounds lighter than when he underwent the procedure in March of 2010, the New York Daily News reported.

Now, Ryan weighs about the same as recently-acquired backup quarterback, Tim Tebow, according to Bloomberg.

Lap band surgery, or laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, limits food intake by making the stomach smaller with an inflatable silicon ring that is wrapped around the upper part of the stomach, according to WebMD. People who undergo the surgery feel fuller faster, as the stomach can only hold a smaller amount of food, which may help them lose weight.

After lap band surgery, the doctor can make adjustments to the tightness of the band, which changes the speed at which food travels through the digestive system, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Weight loss surgery is not a quick fix, however; maintaining a healthy diet and following an exercise plan are key to keeping the weight off. Consequently, lap band surgery is only recommended for people with a body mass index (BMI) over 40, or over 35 if they also have a weight-related health issue, like sleep apnea or diabetes, according to the NIH.

Like any surgical procedure, lap band surgery carries with it some risks. Research has questioned whether these concerns really outweigh the benefits of slimming down. A small study from 2011 found that by 12 years later almost half of lap band surgery patients had to have the band removed because it had begun to erode. Others experienced infections or an enlarged stomach, and in some people, the band began to eat through the stomach wall, U.S. News reported.

In 2009, five people died soon after lap band surgery at 1-800-GET-THIN clinics in California, leading the FDA to warn consumers about misleading information in ads from the company, Time.com reported.
